SACAN is part of the Climate Action Network (CAN), a worldwide network of over 1300 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in over 130 countries working to promote government and individual action to limit human-induced climate change to ecologically sustainable levels.

Our mission is driving climate justice in South Africa with a common message, by partnering, mobilization and support to influence the design and development of an effective strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ensure its implementation at regional, national and community level. Our Vision is to be the vanguard of climate action coordination in South Africa.

Carefully build our statement according to the country/institute/person being approached. We aim to influence climate action in South Africa through a people and policy orientated approach.

Develop common policy positions, informed by science;

Develop integrated strategies for UNFCCC and other bilateral and multilateral processes;

Knowledge and information sharing;

Information sharing internally (mailing lists, conference calls, meetings…);

Multi-stakeholder engagements (business, labour, private & public sector, academia etc.)

03Objectives

Our goal is to develop, together with stakeholders, furthermore promoting renewable energy, reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation programmes and the sustainable use of water resources, it is fostering a low carbon development. Moreover, its goal is to develop a networking structure in order to inform and empower the South African community, providing a platform for public dialogues, with the purpose of giving South Africans a national voice in the climate change discourse and raise awareness to enable a climate-resilient behaviour. South African Climate Action Network targets the implementation of effective national policies, strategies and actions concerning climate change impacts. Furthermore, their mission is bringing the international climate agenda into the local context of South Africa to embrace Agenda 2030 and the Paris Agreement. In the interest of an accurate operation and socio-economic development South African Climate Action Network undertakes scientific research on climate change and environment development in several areas throughout South Africa.

Projects 

SACAN convenes stakeholders from government institutions and ministries, private sector, development partners and civil society to discuss the current and future climate change and environmental related effects on community wellbeing and economic growth.
